The Ancient Greeks believed in developing a Sound Mind and a Sound Body as the way to live a fulfilling life. SigEp adopted this philosophy with the Balanced Man Ideal and since 1990 has awarded the Balanced Man Scholarship to some of the best students coming to campuses across the nation. There are over 150 chapters of Sigma Phi Epsilon offering the Balanced Man Scholarship. Membership in the Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity is not a requirement.
The Pennsylvania Beta Beta chapter of Sigma Phi Epsilon strives to exemplify the cardinal principles of virtue, diligence, and brotherly love, by putting a high value on a sound mind and a sound body. A true Balanced Man is exemplary of these ideals in his everyday life. The ideal candidate for the Balanced Man Scholarship is an incoming freshman or sophomore male who demonstrates outstanding achievement in the following areas: academics, leadership, athletics, and community involvement. Sigma Phi Epsilon values excellence in the aforementioned areas, which we refer to as achieving a Sound Mind within a Sound Body, and we recognize incoming freshman males accordingly. We award one $250, one $500, and one $1000 scholarship payable to the recipient, which is awarded at our annual Balanced Man Scholarship Banquet, mid-October each year.
